Gather Something Good with Meg Miles

Gather Something Good with Meg Miles

We were so excited to interview Meg and learn from her about how she is able to successfully gather with her loved ones often. Meg is an amazing mom, business owner (Wilma FItness Program and App), fitness specialist, personal trainer, and RN. Meg is inspiring and we hope you are able to learn from her too!

What are ways you make gathering more attainable?

"I love keeping it simple— Yummy food, warm hospitality, and a welcoming space matter more than perfection or having a “Pinterest-worthy” presentation. I think a lot of people shy away from hosting a gathering because they don’t feel they have a space that’s “good enough” or “pretty enough” etc. But sometimes it’s the last-minute get-togethers (not perfectly planned) that end up being my very favorite. I also love using what I already have, from kitchen staples to decor, and it helps gathering seem more attainable. It also forces you to get a little more creative too! Also, don’t ever be afraid to delegate food assignments out to the group! Having people bring a dish or side is so easy and takes off a lot of prep or work for you as a host. It's about making the process feel easy and natural so the joy of gathering isn't overshadowed by stress or pressure.

Favorite hosting tip to 'gather something good'?

Set the tone with intention— thoughtful + cute details with a relaxed vibe make all the difference. I also suggest adding a personal touch—something small but meaningful, like a handwritten note, or personalized place cards, or a dish that brings fun memories. When you host with thoughtfulness, the gathering takes on a special kind of magic that’s hard to recreate.

How does gathering people together bring you joy?
There’s something truly special about creating space where people can simply be—free to laugh, connect, and share stories. I especially love small gatherings where you feel you can get to know people even more and have time to chat past “the surface.” Even inviting neighbors or friends to dinner can be a fun way to connect and get to know people better. Connection always brings me joy! I always feel so happy when I get to be with my girlfriends over good food, and I treasure those memories.

What are your favorite types of gatherings to have?
I love smaller dinner parties, where you can slow down, savor good food, and have more meaningful conversations. But I also love hosting playful gatherings, like girls’ nights doing something fun, game nights, or casual get-togethers with friends. Brunch is also one of my favorite times to gather. Often, the older kids are at school during this time and it's just a fun mid-morning boost to be with friends and chat or catch-up over a light meal. Even meeting up at the park, setting out picnic blankets, and letting our kids run wild – these are some of my favorite gatherings! In the summer, we love BBQing and hosting people outside in the backyard. It’s always my favorite time of year for gathering people together!

What makes a gathering feel successful to you?
One where everyone feels seen and loved. And also a gathering where everyone has fun! The people are always the most important part. I love the feeling of knowing you’ve spent time with people you love and that everything seemed to flow naturally and without a lot of stress.

Do you have any favorite traditions/rituals you like to include in your gatherings?

I love putting together playlists that will bring music into the gathering, making it comfortable and fun. I always love leaving out blankets or chairs or “cozy corners” for people to gravitate towards to retreat for quieter conversations. I love coming up with a color palette or “theme” for the gathering and pulling out my fancier or more unique table décor to make things fun. Pinterest is helpful for inspo! It brings me so much joy to set up a fun table and fun gathering. I love the process of creating something special for people.

But gatherings around holidays are also some of my favorites because you can incorporate different food traditions or rituals. For example, at Thanksgiving, one of my favorite rituals is to start with a moment of gratitude—whether it’s a simple toast or everyone sharing something they’re thankful for. It sets the tone for the evening and reminds everyone of the simple joys in life. At Christmas we always have Swiss Raclette with all the same sides and that has become a tradition my family looks forward to and loves. On the fourth of July we always gather people in the backyard for a BBQ and yard games.

I could share so many more, but holidays are such a fun time to gather and create lasting memories.

To anyone who is hesitant to gather because your space “isn’t good enough,” remember it’s always about the people rather than the place, and will always always be worthwhile. Gather on, friends! And have fun doing it! "

Thank you Meg for your willingness to share your expertise with us! We value what we learned and cannot wait to implement it for our gatherings this summer!
